The basic schematic of a wind power system is shown in Figure 1(1). The major components of a wind power system are: Wind turbine(s): This is the primary wind energy conversion device. Different types of wind turbines can be used for various wind farm locations and site conditions. A wind turbine converts wind energy to mechanical energy and rotates a shaft, which is connected to a generator. The generator converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. Modern wind turbines use a permanent magnet type generator. The generator converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. Modern wind turbines use a permanent magnet type generator. Inverter: This converts the direct current (DC) generated by the generator to alternating current (AC) for transmission via the power grid. The power grid is connected with a substation, which converts the AC into the required distribution voltage. Wind farm controller: This is the interface between the turbine controller and the substation.
